WWII Books

There have been gazillions of books written on World War II. Here are some that I have enjoyed:

The Second World War   A comprehensive history of the war by John Keegan, one of the world's most distinguished contemporary military historians.  Published by Penguin, 1989. 608 pg.

World War II Extra   Selections from newspapers around the world during 1939-45. Very interesting. Published by Castle Books, Edison, US, 1999. 326 pg.

The Tools of War 1939/45 and Chronology of Important Events   The weapons, tanks, aircraft, ships, and vehicles of World War II from a Canadian point of view. Published by Reader's Digest, 1969. 96 pg.

Churchill at War – His "Finest Hour" in Photographs 1940-1945   By Martin Gilbert, a leading historian and one of Churchill's official biographers. Published by SevenOaks, 2010. 160 pg.

The Essential Vehicle Identification Guide: Western Allied Tanks 1939-45   The name says it all! This book has basic and detailed information on western allied tanks and vehicles. By David Porter and published by Amber Books Ltd, 2009. 191 pg.

D-Day   A great book by Brigadier Peter Young, a well-known historian and author who took part in the Normandy invasion with the British army's No. 3 Commando. Published by Bison Books, 1981. 57 pg.

The Canadians at War 1939/45   Many fascinating Canadian stories from the war. Published by Readers Digest Association (Canada), 1986 (2nd ed.). 480 pg.

German War Art 1939-1945   This book features paintings and drawings by German war artists, showing what WWII was like for German soldiers. Edited by William P. Yenne and published by Bison Books, 1983. 160 pg.

The Hiding Place   A touching true story of a Dutch family which got caught hiding Jews during the Nazis' rule of their country. By Corrie Ten Boom. Published by Bantam Books, 1971. 241 pg.

A Soldier's View "The Personal Photographs of Canadians At War 1939-1945" Very interesting photos. By Blake Heathcote, and published by Doubleday Canada, 2005. 323 pg.
